POSITION: ACCOUNTING INTERN
POSITION NO: 2.111
DEPT: Finance
This is a paid 6-8 month internship, approximately 12 hours per week, for a student currently working towards a Bachelor’s or Masters Degree in Accounting. Under the general direction of the Assistant Finance Director, this position will give the Intern real life experience in a Governmental Finance Office. As a member of the Finance Team, this position will gain cross training in many areas of the department. This training may include, but is not limited to duties related to grants, debt, payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, fixed assets, journal entries, utility billing, the annual audit, and the annual budget. Three of the main objectives for this position are:
In-putting data and completing reconciliations for the City bank accounts, credit card accounts and payments for ambulance runs.
Performing a Capital Fixed Asset audit for all of the city’s assets, including confirming location of asset, photo of applicable assets, and amount of depreciation to date.
Coordinating with Finance employees to document all applicable policies, procedures and internal controls for their function. Building that information into a Finance Guide for the department.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of accounting terms and processes
Knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word.
Ability to exhibit an exceptional learning capacity.
Ability to use equipment and supplies in a safe and economical manner.
Ability to plan, organize, and/or prioritize daily assignments and work activities, and complete work assignments in a timely and accurate manner.
Ability to display patience under difficult and stressful conditions.
Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
Ability to interact in a professional and respectful manner with city staff and the public.
Training, Certification, and Experience
Completion of a minimum of 9 credit hours of accounting and 6 credit hours of business courses at an accredited college or university.
