Responsibilities: Identifies safety concerns and potential claims. Reviews adverse trends in patient care and overall institutional safety. Utilizes the System’s risk and claims database and other incident reporting tools to perform routine and ad hoc data analyses. Conducts investigations into clinical and professional adverse events for purposes of identifying potential claims, including via reviews of medical records and safety event reports. Participates and supports the Department of Quality’s program for responding to safety event reports. Responds to clinical staff inquiries regarding the appropriate handling of patient care issues. Proactively seeks to mitigate potential safety concerns and claims. Develops an annual risk management education plan for various levels of employees, medical staff and leadership based on the review of trends in patient care and claims. Prepares and gives educational presentations to implement the plan. Assesses the effectiveness of plans and the implementation of changes as necessary to insure effective plan correction and patient safety. Manages, in conjunction with the Deputy General Counsel – Litigation & Risk, actual and potential professional liability claims for The **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***.. Identifies claims suitable for early resolution and develops plans for resolution. Represents the System in pre-litigation resolution of claims. Manages outside counsel handling pending claims. Assists outside counsel in completing an initial evaluation of claims, preparing timeline of events, and identifying key issues and relevant staff. Coordinates responses to discovery including assisting with preparation of witnesses for deposition. Monitors ongoing claims and develops claim response strategies. Maintains and disseminates information about clinical risk management to System leadership and operations. Explores current standards and legislation related to health care risk management, new technologies and program expansion opportunities. Creates and prepares on-going risk management reports, in conjunction with Deputy General Counsel – Litigation & Risk, for leadership and the Board of Trustees. Assists the Assistant General Counsel – Operational Risk Management in addressing risks across the System. Displays sensitivity to and understanding of various cultural, ethnic, racial, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
